What You Need to Know About Wheel Balancers

If you are considering getting into the wheel service business either as a professional or a private garage owner, then you will need a reliable computer wheel balancer and a tire changer. There are many models of computer wheel balancers from which to choose.

A computer wheel balancer, when used properly, provides accurate measurement information as to the out of balance condition of a wheel assembly. The wheel balancer calculates the amount of weight needed to correct the out of balance condition and also identifies the correct location on the wheel for the operator to attach the appropriate wheel weight.

It is extremely important that the operator pays close attention to the information provided by the wheel balancing machine so that the wheel assembly may be balanced correctly. The correct amount of weight placed on the wheel at the correct location on the wheel will result in a balanced tire/wheel assembly.
However, it is important to note that a tire/wheel assembly which is “perfectly balanced” does not guarantee that the vehicle will experience a smooth ride on a level highway at 50 MPH. There are many other variables which contribute to the vehicle’s “rolling” performance. A bent rim, loose lug nuts, or a tire belt separation can adversely affect the riding comfort of a vehicle that is rolling on a full set of “balanced tires”. Tires that have cupped spots or irregular worn tread patterns may be “perfectly” balanced on any computer tire balancer and may still not “roll smoothly” down the highway. The old adage that you can balance a square tire and it will NOT deliver a smooth ride is very accurate.
Large off the road tires with deep lugs will not ride smoothly, no matter how perfectly the tires are balanced. These deep lugs on tire will actually pick up stones and other highway debris and hold these objects between the lug patterns on the tire to create an out of balance condition.

It is extremely important that when mounting the tire and wheel assembly on a computer balancer shaft that the operator uses the correct cone mounting system or lug mounting system to ensure that the wheel is properly mounted. If the wheel is not solidly mounted, the wheel could easily rotate on the balancing shaft when the balance cycle begins or ends and the balancer’s results would not be accurate.

Puli wheel balancers are available in several models. The high speed Puli wheel balancers are capable of balancing small motorcycle and scooter wheels all the way up to large super single wheels found on the trucks. Puli offers several wheel balancer accessories that will allow the operator to properly most tire and wheel assemblies found in most countries.

Wheels need to be balanced not only when you are installing new tires, but also when tires are rotated on a vehicle. There are several factors that can affect the balance condition of a tire that has been driven for thousands of miles. Wheel weights, both the clip on style and the adhesive type can fall off the rim. If a wheel weight moves its position on the rim or falls off of the rim, the once balanced wheel becomes unbalanced. A tire may also shift positons on the rim which would create a situation where the wheel would need to be rebalanced. Most professional tire shops use a tire mounting compound that provides a “slippery” surface to the rim and allows the tire to be mounted and demounted easily. Once the tire is mounted, this professional tire mounting compound dries to become a paste that actually helps keep the tire from moving on the rim. If the incorrect tire mounting compound is used (EG: dishwasher soap), the slippery substance can remain slippery for a long period of time. If the car owner accelerates quickly or brakes quickly, the tire can actually move on the slippery rim so that the wheel and tire become out of balance because the position of the tire has changed.

A balanced set of tires provides a much smoother car ride than a car whose tires are not balanced. A set of balanced and properly inflated tires also helps to extend the life of the tires by several thousands of miles. Wheel alignment and tire balancing are two important services that need to be performed on every vehicle to ensure a smooth ride and extended tire life.

How Can we Stay Competitive in the Auto Repair Market?

Vehicles will always need to be serviced, and it’s nearly impossible to outsource this industry overseas. For both car enthusiasts and shop owners—and just about everyone who drives or will drive a car—the auto landscape is quickly changing in profound ways. The changes will affect everything about the owner/car relationship, and if auto-related businesses and DIY’ers don’t stay on top of the market, their ability to service vehicles on both the professional and DIY levels will be reduced or fundamentally restricted.

The concept boils down to one idea: auto mechanics need to educate themselves
in a much more “techy” manner than in the past, if they want to be able to service newer, more digitally-controlled vehicle processes. Plus, Mechanic under car consulting futuristic interface the auto repair industry, like it or not, is shrinking. Let’s look at some industry-busting stats. Millions of technicians are retiring now or in the near future, and there are not millions of young techs to replace them. At the same time, cars are lasting longer than ever before; the so-called “sweet spot” for aftermarket repairs today (6 – 11 years old) will only increase by the year 2020. In the next five years, the market will see 76 million vehicles at least 16 years old. This means that cars
fitted with today’s technology are here to stay, which in turn means technicians need to be prepared to handle these advanced vehicles if they want to stay relevant against a shrinking and increasingly competitive base. Given that only 25% of car owners get their repairs done at dealerships, there’s no reason to believe Mr. and Mrs. Smith from the neighborhood won’t be stopping
by your shop… if you’re certified to work on their vehicle. Also consider that while a little over half of the car market is projected to remain domestic, shops that service less-common sports cars, such as Ferraris and Jaguars, are going to stand out in the sea of professional shops that aren’t
equipped for these jobs.

The best news for anyone who works on vehicles today is that many of the traditional methods of auto repair will always be in fashion. We’ll always
need to get under our cars with lifts or jacks, and the sort of equipment that Puli deals in (tire changers, wheel balancer, car lifts, tire inflator, air
compressors, etc.) will always have a place in the auto field. Still, time only moves forward: technology improves and global safety standards become stricter, which means we have to constantly adapt our product lines to keep up with the times. If we didn’t, we’d be out of business by now or losing to our competitors. (Fortunately, this hasn’t been the case!)

Perhaps the biggest market change today is the switch to digital processes. This is more than an engine diagnostic on a laptop or tablet, although these devices remain incredibly useful. At this point in time, your ability to stay certified in new repair methods and car technologies is essential, and the one thing we know about technology is that it’s only going to get crazier, more impressive and more difficult to learn if we don’t keep up. Updated shop equipment needs to be purchased regularly, so unfortunately for customers and shops alike, expensive technology, training and equipment upgrades mean service costs aren’t likely to decrease any time soon. The few out there in the DIY sector who are able to keep up, however, are likely to flourish (the mythical half mechanic / half tech-pro).

Wireless connectivity is another game-changing feature that’s fast becoming more and more a part of the auto repair world. Car manufacturers are already able to send downloadable upgrades, which potentially reduces body shop involvement in the upkeep of complex vehicle functions. This translates into lost revenue for auto shops. On the other hand, all technology, especially wireless technology, has the potential to break or malfunction, and anything on the web is vulnerable to hacking. Service shops certified to handle a multitude of wirelessly controlled devices will have a leg up on dealerships and other competing shops, but it will take an ongoing dedication to hiring and training auto mechanics on 21st-century services and technologies.

To this end, shop trainers need to bolster their response to increases in vehicle telematics, which refers to “the branch of information technology that
deals with the long-distance transmission of computerized information.” We’re close to the day when auto shops across the country will be able to wirelessly deliver engine diagnostic data to customers before their cars even make it into
the shop. This signifies a very real shift in the services you need to offer if you plan to stay ahead. Can you envision how powerful of a tool remote
diagnosis could be? The marketing potential alone is worth the price of admission (so to speak). Not to mention, you’re creating huge savings for
customers and inspiring their trust, which means repeat business, which means referrals, etc. And that’s just one example of the changes to come!

At Puli, we try to stay ahead of our competition by offering customers as much access to our services as possible. We also know we can always do better, so we’re constantly improving our products, website and means of connecting with
our distributors. Even little details, ones that show our customers we keep up with the times, go a long way.

Learn How to Operate Your Tire Changer Correctly and Safely

Using a tire changer is not a complicated process, as long as you take the time to review the steps needed for the proper operation. It is worthwhile to review the owner’s manual and any other documentation that came with your changer prior to using it. Reviewing this information not only ensures you operate the machine correctly, but also safely.

Three basic procedures you commonly encounter when using a tire changer are breaking the bead, demounting a tire, and mounting a tire. Each procedure can be broken down into several steps, with each step requiring specific tasks to be completed before moving onto the next one. Here are the detailed information for the steps.

Breaking the Bead

    Remove the valve core.
    Break down the bead.

Demounting a Tire

Clamp the tire to the table.
    Position the mount/demount head.
Pull the top bead over the mount/demount head.
    Raise the tire.
Pull the bottom bead over the mount/demount head.

Mounting a Tire

    Apply the tire lube.
    Position the tire to mount.
    Seat the bead
    Inflate the tire.

It should be pointed out that reviewing “how to” instructions is not the same for each type of shop or situation you might encounter. Further, the tips and suggestions provided are only to illustrate certain functions of a wheel clamp tire changer. If you have additional questions or are not sure how to perform a specific operation, please contact our technical support team.
