Annual Car Lift Inspections
CAR LIFT INSPECTIONS MUST BE PREFORMED REGULARLY TO ENSURE SAFETY.
You load up the car lift with a very heavy car, raise it up and then stand under it. It is VITALLY important that you take all the precautions you can to ensure you, and your staff, is safe.
You should get your lift inspected annually by a qualified lift inspector. You can find some qualified inspectors from the lift’s manufacturer or from the Automotive Lift Institutes online database. They can inspect any style and brand of lift.
What happens during the annual car lift inspection? During the inspection, the inspector is looking to confirm that all of the lift’s components are in place and in working order. Most importantly, that your lift is SAFE.
Examining all accessible structural components, including welds, for any evidence of overloading, misuse or abuse.
Examining electrical components and wiring.
Checking the lift controls to ensure accessibility, an unobstructed view of the lift and an automatic return to the neutral or “off ” position when released.
Locating appropriate lift documentation, safety instructions, vehicle-lifting information, lift safety labeling and capacity labeling.
Confirming adequate clearances around the lift.
Checking all fastening devices for tightness and proper fit.
An annual lift inspection includes a thorough evaluation of the entire vehicle lift.
Checking the lowering speed over the full down travel of the lift.
Operating the lift through its full cycle and checking the operation of the positive stop. Checking to see if the lift locks engage in the fully extended position.
Checking all lubrication points for cleanliness, integrity of fitting and presence of lubricant.
Checking all chains and cables for excessive slack.
Checking all potential pinch points. The standard is just the starting point. Every lift manufacturer should provide specific directions for inspecting each of its lifts. ALI Certified Lift Inspectors are qualified to inspect any brand or model of vehicle lift.

Car Lift Maintenance: Check it Every Day
I met a gentleman the other day that was 96 years young! He was surprisingly
agile and swift on his feet. He had few wrinkles and looked really good for his
age! I was really impressed and thought he wasn’t a day past 70. That got me to
thinking about ‘maintenance’. If I exercise, take care of myself, eat right
and stress less…. Will that help me to age just as gracefully?
There are Puli car lifts out there that have been doing their job for decades and
still run like the day they were installed. They have aged well, with the right
maintenance and care. Do you know how to maintain your lift so it will run like
new for many years? Luckily, it’s easier to know how to help your lift age well
…. my wrinkles, not so much!
Perhaps the most important car lift maintenance is to adjust the cables. Over
time, the cables stretch and if not adjusted, a cable can jump a pulley or cause
the lift to rise unevenly. Each cable should have about .5” of deflection
(should not move more than .5”). This is true for a two-post or four-post lift.
Adjustments are very simple to do and the steps are specific in the manual
provided with your lift. Please look that over for instructions on how to adjust
your cables.
Next is lubrication on your lift. Chain rollers, cable pulleys, safety latches
and carriage tracks inside the towers. We recommend white lithium grease. You
should do this weekly.
A simple walk around your car lift for a safety check is easy, yet rarely done.
Make sure there is nothing in the tracks or carriage (shop rags, tools,
cardboard, etc.) that may cause the machine to bind up. Run the lift up and down
without a load and ensure the safety features are in working order.
In addition to regular in-house inspections, the standard requires that all
vehicle lifts be inspected at least annually by a “qualified lift inspector.” A
lift inspection is a thorough evaluation of the operating mechanism(s), safety
system(s), maintenance, structural integrity and field modifications of a
particular lift in order to identify any risks which may affect the ability of
that lift to operate in a safe and reliable manner.
– Lift cables normally require replacement every four to five years.
– Lift cables should be replaced if you see three or more broken wires in one
strand.
– Replace the cables if you see: corrosion or rusting on the wires or ends,
kinking, crushed
areas, cutting, spreading, a cable core protruding, or any other abnormality.
– If any cable defects are found the lift should be shut down immediately until
the defective
cable(s) have been replaced.
– Cables and other lift parts should be kept free of corrosive agents, solvents,
and road
salt. If such agents are spilled or splashed on any lift component, immediately
rinse and
wipe down with a clean rag.
– Spray cables every three months with Penetrating Oil and wipe down. Failure to
keep
cables free of corrosive agents will lead to reduced service life, cable failure,
etc. which
could result in property damage and/or personal injury.
Every. Single. DAY.
– Give the lift a quick once-over before using it. Check for any obvious leaks
or defects.
Inspect cables, hoses and chains for any sign of wear.
– Verify lift is operating properly, rising smoothly and levelly and all locking
mechanisms for
the arms and carriages are working.
Every. Single. WEEK.
– Lubricate all chain rollers and cable pulleys. Grease the carriage tracks
inside the towers.
– Check all nuts and bolts; tighten where necessary.
– After the first week, check cable tension and adjust as necessary. Check every
6 months
after.
Every. Single. MONTH.
– Check and lubricate all safety mechanisms; ensure they are in proper working
order.
Replace any worn or defective parts.
– Check and tighten anchor bolts as necessary.
– Inspect all moving parts; replace any worn or defective parts.

Maintain your Car Lift
How do you maintain it in tip top shape for a long period of time? I’m sure you want to get your money’s worth and use it for years to come so follow these tips in order to maintain your car lift in the best shape it can be.
How to maintain your car lift
Things that must be checked every month
Make sure that you check the chains and cables of the car lift. What you can do is grab a thick rag, splash some lightweight oil on it and wipe the length of the cable or chain to see if there are any breaks in the strands of the cable.
Check the hydraulic equipment and hoses for leaks, if there are any leaks, you will probably see some oil stains on the floor so this is a good way to check.
Also, make sure that the arms of your lift are working properly. Make sure to extend the arms all the way out, and also, check to see if the rubber pads are in good shape.
Inspect all the nuts and bolts on your car lift and make sure that all of them are fastened tightly and securely.
Things to do to maintain your car lift
First of all, make sure that you put the correct oil in your car lift. Most people always use transmission fluid when they should always be using hydraulic oil #32.
Clean your lift every month, otherwise a lot of dirt and mud will start building up throughout the car lift. You can do this every month or so by wiping down all the grease from those hard to reach places.
Once you have cleaned your car lift thoroughly, make sure that the cables, chains, pulley system, rollers, and carriage pins are all correctly lubricated with enough grease. If your hear a “squeak” when operating your car lift, that means that one of the pulleys are dry, so make sure that you grease the pulleys so you can keep your car lift in tip top shape.
It would also be a good idea to bring in a certified local service man to check your car lift every 6 months to a year. Even though it might cost you a bit for the service tech to check everything, it will be a lot less expensive than if your car lift breaks down. And since you are planning on keeping this car lift for at least 5 years, it is advisable for someone to come in and fix whatever might need tuning.
Doing all of these things will maintain your car lift in great condition for many years to come. Remember, you are investing at least a couple of thousand dollars in this equipment and want to treat it the best way possible. So make sure you do these simple things in order to maintain your car lift in great condition for at least the next 5 years.

Choosing the Right Automotive Lift: 2 or 4 Post?
If you're in the market for a new automotive lift, you’ve probably spent some time trying to decide between a 2 post car lift and a 4 post car lift. In a perfect world, you would have the space and budget to accommodate both types of automotive lifts. Sometimes that isn’t an option, though.
Given that both types of lift offer distinct advantages, it’s important to
understand which option best suits your needs.
Benefits of Two Post Lifts
Two post automotive lifts are best for tire, break and suspension work since the related components hang free.
Two post car lifts must be securely anchored.
Since the wheel assembly hangs below the lift arms instead of on top of
racks, two post lifts can generally raise the car higher in a low ceiling
garage.
Two post lifts take up a smaller footprint in your workspace.
Thanks to Quick Cycle technology available on many of our two post lifts, up and down time can be dramatically reduced – by as much as 42%.
Benefits of Four Post Lifts
Four post automotive lifts are best for engine, transmission and exhaust
work since they are more stable on account of having twice the number of posts.
Four post lifts are better suited for storage since the suspension can rest in its natural state instead of dangling free.
Loading a vehicle on a four post lift is often considered easier since you
simply have to drive on to the racks.
The Verdict
Choosing the best lift for your garage is a highly personal decision with many
factors to take into consideration. You have to balance your needs, budget and
available space – among other things.
Are you tight on space? Is the majority of your work on tires, breaks or
suspensions? A 2 post lift is probably your best bet.
Are you interested in long-term storage? Do you work primarily on engines,
transmissions and exhausts? Look into 4 post lifts.

How Inground Car Lifts Enhance Car Repair Facilities
Historically, in ground car lifts were the standard in the car repair industry.
Although they’ve in ground car lift become less frequent over the years, there
is good reason that these lifts were once the premier option. Their most
attractive feature is that they are hidden when not in use, which can help
create a clean, professional appearance at your shop. Plus, the ability to store
lifts underground helps with organization. The benefit of these lifts definitely
extends beyond a cleaned-up image, though.
Additional space, which is especially important in smaller auto repair
facilities, is another top benefit of an in ground automotive lift. For small
shops, a below ground lift allows for more room to work on the vehicle when it’
s lifted for repair. When the lift is unused and retracted, there is more space
to walk around the shop and use floor space in an efficient way.
But, the added space can go a long way in higher profile shops, such as
automotive dealerships. In a larger shop, in ground lifts mean the opportunity to
purchase more above-ground lifts. With a larger variety of lifts you can offer a
larger variety of services and increase shop productivity. Even within the
category of inground car lifts, though, you can find different types.
Specifically, there are two different types of in ground lifts: scissor lifts and
elevator style lifts. Each of these provides variability in servicing options
for different automobiles. They also offer different working conditions so
repairmen can find their stride in the in ground lift that works for them.
Regardless of type, though, these lifts allow for easy access to door and body
repair.
Though they used to be the subject of controversy, environmentally friendly
inground automotive lifts are now the standard. The former design of these auto
lifts made them prone to undetectable oil spills, which would cause
environmental contamination by seeping into the ground. Now, there is a huge
selection of green inground car lifts, which are also cost effective and guard
against any EPA issues.

How to Fit a 4 Post Lift in Your Garage
Is trying to determine the space and height requirements to install a 4 post lift in your home garage causing you some challenges?
The first step to solving your problem is finding a reputable manufacturer that makes a variety of vehicle lifts. Experienced employees will help you find a model that comfortably fits in your garage.
But there are other steps you should take to install a lift that will allow you to safely park an extra car.
Here are the top four questions to address to ensure successful 4 post lift installation:
1.What Measurement Do I Need?
When choosing to install a 4 post lift in your garage, you must you ensure you have the necessary space available.
The typical foot print for a 4 post car storage lift is 103 inches wide by 173 inches long.
To help put the size of the lift in perspective, we design the lift so that the inside of the vertical columns on either side of the runway are 8 feet apart.
This is the typical opening of most garage doors.
In terms of the length, most passenger cars are approximately 16 to 17 feet.
So, in most cases, if you can fit a car in the garage, you will able to fit the lift in the same space.
Then, the only determining factor will be the minimum height required.
2.How Much Height Do I Need?
The question we get asked most often is “how much height do I need?”
Unfortunately, there isn’t a concrete answer to this question since every customer is a bit different.
But there is an easy way to figure it out for your space and your cars. It’s all math. A simple equation will tell you how high your garage ceiling must be to use and store a 4 post vehicle lift.
Let’s say you want to park a Fox Body Mustang above a ’69 Camaro. Both are about 55 inches tall. The lift itself needs another eight inches of height. Four inches is for the runway thickness. The other four inches is for clearance onto
a safety device.
Here’s the equation you’ll need to follow to see if the car lift will fit in your garage:
Mustang 55” + Camaro 55” + Lift 8” = 118” Minimum height required
As you can see, your garage ceiling must have a minimum height of 118 inches, or 9’.8” feet.
3.What About the Garage Door?
To use garage space to the fullest, you may need a high-lift kit on your existing garage door. Installing these kits involves changing the garage door track to increase vertical rise, while keeping the original door. A spring change may also be needed.
But the most important part of the process is setting up a jackshaft garage door opener.b2ap3_thumbnail_IMG_2120.JPG
Unlike most openers, these ones don’t waste space by hanging from the middle of your ceiling. They’re mounted on the wall in the free area beside your garage door.
Contact a garage door service company. They will likely need to look at the existing hardware to be able to perform an estimate on the conversion.
You’ll instantly notice the extra ceiling height, giving you the space you need for your 4 post lift.
4.What About the Slope of the Garage Floor?
Each garage floor has slope for drainage, starting at about 1/8 feet for each foot of floor. This can make the approach angle tricky when driving onto some lift designs.
When in doubt, call professionally-trained sales associates. There may be different options for the lift you decide to choose, based on the wheelbase and ride height of your car.
By working with a company that manufactures vehicle lifts for residential garages, you will quickly and easily figure out what the best car lift is for your specific vehicle and space requirements.
Remember, buying a 4 post lift is a cost-effective alternative to expanding your garage. Instead of undergoing an expensive year-long process, you’ll house an
extra car after a safe and quick installation.

The Pros and Cons of Double Scissor Lifts
When purchasing a car lift, the many available options can be confusing. Having the right variety of lifts is vital to productivity in full service facilities. With a double scissor lift, you will find efficiency and productivity. Plus, double scissor car lifts are safer and more reliable than standard scissor lifts.
Pros of Double Scissor Lifts:
• Ideal for tire rotations and brakes: The scissor lift provides flexible access to tires and surrounding areas, especially when lifted to precise ergonomic heights.
• Easy loading and unloading: The parallel approach ramps and synchronized
lifting make driving on, lifting, and releasing a vehicle a smooth procedure.
• Multiple installation options: Our scissor lift can be installed above ground or flush mount, whichever is more convenient for your facility.
• Safe, reliable lifting: Using a double scissor vehicle lift ensures that both sides of the vehicle are lifting at the same speed. Plus, the vehicles are always lifted to the same height for ensured safety.
• Extendable platform: With Challenger Lifts’ double scissor lift, you can
simply flip up the diamond plated approach ramp to extend it. This ensures
reliable lifting even for longer wheelbase vehicles.
Cons of Double Scissor Lifts:
• Restricted underbody access: Although they allow tire and brake maintenance,
scissor lifts can block parts of the vehicle’s underside. For underbody
maintenance, mobile column lifts are ideal.
• Not practical for heavy duty vehicles: For lifting of large, heavy vehicles a more intensive vehicle lift is the safest option. Heavy duty two post lifts can lift trucks and medium duty commercial vehicles.

How to Safely Lift a Car on a 2-Post Lift
Floor jacks and jack stands are more readily available than two-post lifts, but do not offer the height and ease-of-use of two-post lifts.
Two-post lifts are installed in garages that have a suitable ceiling
height and can raise vehicles to a level that allows the mechanics to
sit or stand up, giving greater access to the vehicle's underside and
mechanical parts.
1 Drive the vehicle in between the two posts of the lift so that it is centered in between the two posts.
2 Swing the support arms that are connected to the two-post lift and align them with the vehicle's subframe, which will support the car when it is raised into the air.
3 Visually spot-check the placement of the supporting arms after initially positioning them to ensure that there are no mechanical obstructions that may cause the vehicle to slip once it begins its ascent into the air.
4 Engage the lift function of your two-post lift and slowly raise the car into the air. The support arms may have to travel a few inches by themselves before catching the subframe of the car.
5 Maintain visual contact with the supporting arms as the car is raised to ensure your safety, as well as the safety of the vehicle, until the car is fully raised into the air.
