Wheel Alignment Vs. Wheel Balancing

Wheel balancing and alignments are commonly mistaken for each other, when they actually have very little relation. One deals with the tires directly and the other has an indirect relation.

Purpose
The purpose of a wheel alignment is to prevent uneven tire wear and keep the vehicle driving in a straight line. Wheel balancing prevents vibration caused by the tire.

Mechanics
Wheel alignment is adjusted by changing positioning of suspension and steering components such as inner tie rod ends, outer tie rod ends and camber bolts. Wheel balancing is performed by spinning the tire 100 to 500 rpm on a machine; this machine locates the heavy spot of the tire. A weight is placed on the wheel to counteract the heavy spots.

Intervals
Motorist Assurance Program (MAP) guidelines recommend checking the wheel alignment every year and adjusting it when it is out. Every manufacturer has specific tolerances for all angles. Wheel balancing is required any time a tire is mounted on to a rim whether it is new, used or after repair. Wheel balancing is not needed again until you either feel a vibration or change the tires.
